Why a leaky filtration gasket defeats the filter
A filtration gasket has two jobs: hold the filter media in its housing under operating pressure, and prevent any bypass flow around the media. If the gasket leaks, the fluid or gas short-circuits the filter entirely, and unfiltered particles, pathogens, or chemicals move downstream untouched, and the whole filtration system is compromised without any visible failure signal. The gasket is routinely the single weakest component in a filtration skid, and specifying it correctly matters as much as the media itself.

Filter-housing material picks by filtered stream
Material selection follows the filtered stream: what the gasket contacts, what it can and cannot leach into, and what regulatory callouts the end-use carries.
- Silicone, the default for pharmaceutical and biotech filter housings. FDA 21 CFR 177.2600, USP Class VI, and NSF-51 grades are standard; low compression set holds seal through sterilization cycles; wide temperature range covers autoclaving.
- EPDM, the benchmark for potable-water filtration (NSF-61 grades available), HVAC air-filter frames, and outdoor filter housings. Resists chlorinated water, dilute cleaning chemistries, and ozone; stays flexible across outdoor thermal ranges.
- Viton®, the right call for chemical-process filtration where the stream contains solvents, acids, aromatic hydrocarbons, or aggressive cleaning chemistry. Broad chemical resistance with operating temperature up to +400°F.
- PTFE, specified for semiconductor ultra-pure-water systems, HEPA / ULPA filter frames in high-purity clean rooms, and any filtration stream where chemical inertness and low leachables drive the material decision.
- Non-asbestos fiber, used in industrial filter housings where elevated temperature and bolt load make elastomer gaskets impractical (e.g. hot-oil filtration, dust collectors on high-temperature process exhaust).
- FDA / Medical-grade compounds: if the filtered product contacts the patient or a regulated food stream, the gasket material needs corresponding certification. Multiple elastomer families have FDA-qualified grades.
How filtration gaskets fail in service
- Media bypass around the gasket. Under-sized or under-compressed gasket lets flow take the path of least resistance around the filter element. Fix: specify gasket thickness and durometer against the housing compression force, and verify bolt torque pattern during filter changes.
- Chemical attack from cleaning / sanitization cycles. Steam-in-place (SIP) and clean-in-place (CIP) cycles hit the gasket with hot water, caustic, acid, and occasionally peracetic-acid or chlorine-based sanitizers. Many compounds that are compatible with the process fluid fail under the sanitizer. Fix: verify the gasket material against BOTH the process and the sanitization chemistry, and specify a USP Class VI / FDA-grade silicone for steam-heavy cycles.
- Compression set after repeated cartridge changes. Filter cartridges get swapped often; the housing lid gasket gets re-compressed every cycle. A low- quality compound takes permanent set and loses seal within a few dozen changes. Fix: specify a platinum-cured silicone or low-compression-set EPDM.
- Thermal warp of HEPA / ULPA frames. Cleanroom filter housings see small thermal cycles (+68°F to +95°F) that warp plastic frames slightly; an elastomer gasket with low rebound loses contact on the warp. Fix: specify a thicker or softer-durometer gasket to maintain sealing contact across the thermal cycle range.
- Extractables and leachables contamination. A peroxide-cured silicone gasket in an ultra-pure-water system will leach residual curing byproducts and fail cleanroom extractables testing. Fix: specify platinum-cured silicone, PTFE, or certified USP Class VI compounds for UPW and biotech applications.
Cartridge, housing, and HEPA-frame profiles
Filtration gasket work runs the full range of profiles: small-diameter cartridge seals (often O-rings or lathe-cut rings), flat annular housing-lid gaskets, rectangular HEPA / ULPA frame perimeter gaskets (often with PSA backing for installer-friendly assembly), custom-cut sump and drum gaskets for large-housing filter skids, and fabricated multi-part cartridge seals for cleanroom applications. Filtration gasket specs commonly reference FDA 21 CFR 177.2600 (food contact), USP Class VI (biocompatibility for medical), NSF-61 (potable water components), NSF-51 (food equipment), ASME BPE (bioprocess equipment), and SEMI F70 (semiconductor fluid handling).
