EPDM Rubber Gaskets

EPDM (ethylene propylene diene monomer) is the elastomer of choice when the gasket is exposed to water, steam, weather, or ozone. Cannon Gasket die-cuts custom EPDM gaskets for plumbing, irrigation, HVAC, outdoor lighting, and pool and spa applications where UV, sunlight, and water are part of the service environment. Available in commercial, high-grade, military-spec, peroxide-cured, FDA, and cloth-inserted grades.

Properties of EPDM gaskets

Cannon Gasket cuts EPDM gaskets to your specifications in durometers ranging form 10A to 90A Shore hardness. Excellent resistance to ozone, UV, sunlight, water, steam, and brake fluid.

EPDM tolerances and customization

Standard dimensional tolerances on EPDM gaskets land around ±0.010" to ±0.015" on OD and ID, depending on material durometer and thickness. Tighter tolerances are available on selected grades. Cannon Gasket cuts EPDM to custom profiles in-house and matches lead times to your production volume. PSA backing, pad printing, custom packaging, and kitting are all on the menu when you need them.

How EPDM Performs in Water, Steam, and Outdoor Service

- Superior resistance to ozone, UV, and sunlight (no surface cracking over years of outdoor exposure). - Excellent water and steam resistance. - Good resistance to mild acids, alkalis, ketones, and alcohols. - Available in sulfur-cured (standard) or peroxide-cured (lower compression set, better high-temperature performance).

Where EPDM Gaskets Are Specified

Outdoor enclosures, irrigation valve seals, pool and spa equipment, HVAC components, plumbing flange gaskets, weatherstripping, brake-system seals (compatible with brake fluid), and any application that combines water exposure with sunlight or ozone.

When EPDM Is the Wrong Choice

EPDM is not compatible with petroleum oils, fuels, or greases. For oil or fuel contact, specify Buna-N or Viton. For high-temperature petroleum service, Viton.

Manufacturing Methods

Die-cut, rotary-cut for high-volume runs, steel-rule-cut for large or soft formats, lathe-cut from EPDM tube when thickness exceeds sheet stock. PSA backing and clean room production available.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common EPDM questions.

Are you ISO 9001 certified?
Yes, ISO 9001:2015 certified. Documented quality management covers incoming material verification, in-process inspection, calibrated measurement, final inspection, non-conformance handling, corrective action, and full lot traceability. AS9100-ready for aerospace, with MIL-spec and FDA 21 CFR 177.2600 / USP Class VI grades available on request.
Can EPDM be used with petroleum oils or fuels?
No. EPDM swells heavily in mineral oil, gasoline, diesel, and aromatic hydrocarbons. Specify Buna-N (nitrile) for general petroleum service or Viton for aggressive fuel and chemical exposure. EPDM's strength is water, steam, and polar fluids — not petroleum.
Can you cut custom gasket profiles?
Yes. Custom steel-rule and rotary tooling is built in-house from your drawing or DXF. Complex profiles, multiple through-cuts, tight bolt patterns, and irregular perimeters are all standard work.
Can you supply PSA-backed gaskets?
Yes. Pressure-sensitive adhesive backing is a standard option on most rubber and fiber gasketing, with either permanent or removable liners. Kiss-cut on liner and through-cut both supported on flatbed and rotary presses.
Is EPDM certified for potable water (NSF 61)?
Specific EPDM compounds are NSF 61 certified for drinking-water contact. Peroxide-cured grades are typically the certified ones because they leach fewer extractables than sulfur-cured formulations. Tell us if your program needs NSF 61 — we stock certified material and document the certification on the cert of compliance.
What tolerances can you hold on gasket dimensions?
Standard die-cut tolerance is ±0.010 to ±0.015 inch on OD and ID, depending on material durometer and thickness. Tighter tolerances are available on select grades and thicknesses. Ask if your drawing specifies something tighter and we will confirm feasibility during the quote.
Which gasket material is right for my application?
Start with temperature range, fluid contact, and regulatory requirements. Buna-N is the default for oil and fuel. EPDM for weather, water, and steam. Silicone for extreme temperature and FDA grades. Viton for aggressive chemicals. Our gasket material selection guide walks through the decision framework.
Why is EPDM the standard for outdoor and weather sealing?
EPDM has a saturated polymer backbone with no double bonds for ozone to attack. That makes it the best general-purpose elastomer for outdoor exposure, UV, ozone, and long-term weathering. It is the default for HVAC, automotive weather-strip, solar panel gaskets, and outdoor enclosure seals.
How fast do you return a quote?
Most RFQs come back within one business day. Simple profile updates to an existing tool quote same-day. Send a drawing, DXF, or competing part number and our engineering team reviews material, tolerance, and volume before pricing.
What is the minimum order quantity?
Minimums depend on the part and material. We cut prototype and first-article quantities for engineering evaluation, then scale up to production volumes from the same tooling. For high-volume programs we run JIT, VMI, and Kanban replenishment out of Fontana, California.
What should I send with an RFQ?
Ideal: a drawing or DXF, material spec (or compound family), estimated annual volume, and any regulatory callouts (FDA, USP Class VI, AS9100, MIL-spec). If you only have a sample or a part number from a competing supplier, send that and we will reverse-engineer the spec before quoting.
What are typical lead times?
Prototype and first-article parts usually ship in 5-10 business days. Production runs from existing tooling are 2-3 weeks depending on volume and material lead time. Rush and expedite options available on a case-by-case basis.
Need custom EPDM gaskets?
From prototype to production, any shape, any volume.
