O-Ring vs. Gasket.
Technicians have to be able to seal fluids off from one another or risk a massive leak or worse, a chemical reaction. Which part goes in, an O-ring or a gasket? Are the two ever interchangeable? Knowing which to reach for in different situations is what keeps your machines running and your clients safe.
Unlike other sealing products used in mechanical work, these two cannot be swapped for one another and each serves a unique purpose. Each one does a specific job in how, where, and at what pressure it seals.
What an O-ring does
O-rings are circular elastomer rings cut from rubber, polyurethane, or specialty compounds. They sit in a groove between two cylinders and form an air-tight or liquid-tight seal as the surfaces compress together. These elastomer materials let the ring stretch and expand when necessary, then revert back to its original shape and size, holding pressure against both groove and mating face.
Reach for an O-ring when the service pressure runs high. A standard ring will hold up to 1,500 psi and still maintain integrity, which keeps gas or liquid from escaping. We see them in both dynamic and static duty: fuel seal points, oil and hydraulic seals, fuel systems, pipe joints, and fluid-handling equipment.
What a gasket does
Gaskets are flat sealing parts cut from silicone, Nitrile, Viton, Neoprene, EPDM, PTFE, or fiber composite stock, and they are much more versatile than O-rings. They're not locked into one shape: where an O-ring is always a circle, a gasket can be a triangle coated in pressure-sensitive adhesives or even laminated as needed. Custom profiles, laminated constructions, coated faces, and PSA backing for drop-in assembly are all on the table. You can custom order a gasket for two mating surfaces to make sure they hold together perfectly.
Gaskets are the right call for flat mating surfaces, extreme temperatures, and anywhere the job needs a custom shape or a bigger seal footprint. They show up on paper manufacturing, power generation, oil and gas, food processing, chemical processing, and countless OEM assemblies. When a system is disassembled and then put back together, it's always a good idea to replace the gaskets.
