Why specify EPDM for o-rings?

EPDM is the standard elastomer for outdoor and weather-exposed O-ring applications. It has superior resistance to ozone, UV, and sunlight, with good resistance to steam, brake fluid, and many polar solvents. EPDM is available in sulfur-cured or peroxide-cured formulations — peroxide cures offer better high-temperature performance and lower compression set, important on long-service-life O-rings.

Properties of EPDM o-rings

Cannon Gasket cuts EPDM o-rings to your drawing in durometer and thickness specifications of 40A to 80A Shore hardness. Excellent resistance to ozone, UV, water, steam, brake fluids, dilute acids, and alkalis. Not suitable for petroleum-based oils or fuels.

EPDM tolerances and customization

Standard dimensional tolerances on EPDM o-ringsland around ±0.010" to ±0.015" on OD and ID, depending on material durometer and thickness. Tighter tolerances are available on select grades. Cannon Gasket cuts EPDM to custom profiles in-house and matches lead times to your production volume. PSA backing, pad printing, custom packaging, and kitting are all on the menu when you need them.

How EPDM O-Rings Perform

- Service temperature -40°F to +275°F (peroxide cures higher). - Superior ozone, UV, and sunlight resistance. - Good steam, hot water, and brake fluid resistance. - Poor resistance to petroleum oils and fuels.
