Why specify Polyurethane for gaskets?

Polyurethane (PU) is the elastomer of choice when abrasion resistance, tear strength, and load-bearing capacity matter more than chemical resistance or temperature range. Cannon Gasket die-cuts custom polyurethane gaskets for mining, automotive, hydraulic, and high-wear industrial sealing.

Properties of Polyurethane gaskets

Cannon Gasket cuts Polyurethane gaskets to your drawing in durometer and thickness specifications of 10A to 95A Shore hardness. Good resistance to oils, solvents, and many hydrocarbons; excellent tear and abrasion resistance. Not recommended for concentrated acids, hot water, or polar solvents.

Polyurethane tolerances and customization

Standard dimensional tolerances on Polyurethane gasketsland around ±0.010" to ±0.015" on OD and ID, depending on material durometer and thickness. Tighter tolerances are available on select grades. Cannon Gasket cuts Polyurethane to custom profiles in-house and matches lead times to your production volume. PSA backing, pad printing, custom packaging, and kitting are all on the menu when you need them.

How Polyurethane Performs Under Mechanical Stress

- Exceptional abrasion and tear resistance — among the highest of any elastomer. - High load-bearing capacity at relatively thin cross-sections. - Good resistance to oils, fuels, and aliphatic hydrocarbons. - Available in durometers from 10A to 95A Shore hardness.

Where Polyurethane Gaskets Are Specified

Mining and aggregate equipment seals, hydraulic cylinder seals, vibration dampers, wear pads, automotive suspension components, and applications combining oil exposure with abrasion.

When to Choose Another Material

For high-temperature service, specify Viton or silicone. For steam or hot water, EPDM. Polyurethane should be the choice when wear and tear strength are the primary specification.
