Graphite Gaskets
Key Properties
- Thickness
- Exceptional thermal stability
- High compressibility & recovery
- Low creep relaxation
- Thermal cycling capable
Why specify Graphite for gaskets?
Flexible graphite (often sold under trade names like Grafoil® or Graphtek®) is a thin-foil gasketing material made from expanded mineral graphite. It is the specification for the hottest, most chemically aggressive flange sealing applications where elastomers and compressed fiber materials cannot survive.
Properties of Graphite gaskets
Cannon Gasket cuts Graphite gaskets to your drawing in durometer and thickness specifications of 0.015" to 0.125" thickness. Broad resistance across aggressive media including acids, bases, and solvents. Excellent in high-temperature steam and thermal cycling service.
Graphite tolerances and customization
Standard dimensional tolerances on Graphite gasketsland around ±0.010" to ±0.015" on OD and ID, depending on material durometer and thickness. Tighter tolerances are available on select grades. Cannon Gasket cuts Graphite to custom profiles in-house and matches lead times to your production volume. PSA backing, pad printing, custom packaging, and kitting are all on the menu when you need them.
How Flexible Graphite Performs
- Resistance to virtually all chemicals except strong oxidizers. - Excellent recovery and compressibility — adapts to flange face roughness. - Reinforced grades (with stainless steel insert) handle high bolt loads.
Where Graphite Gaskets Are Specified
Refinery and petrochemical pipe flanges, power generation steam and feedwater service, high-temperature heat exchangers, chemical processing, and applications where temperature or aggressive chemistry rules out fiber and rubber.
Reinforced vs Pure Sheet
- Pure graphite sheet — best chemical resistance, lower mechanical strength. - Stainless-reinforced graphite — stainless mesh or perforated insert for high bolt loads. - Tanged graphite — for higher-pressure applications.
Manufacturing Methods
Die-cut, Flash cut and steel-rule-cut. Often cut as ring gaskets for pipe flanges.
