Why specify Compressed Fiber for gaskets?
Compressed fiber (often abbreviated CNAF for Compressed Non-Asbestos Fiber) is a sheet gasketing material made of aramid or other synthetic fibers bound by an elastomer matrix. It is the modern replacement for asbestos sheet gaskets and the workhorse material for high-pressure flange sealing.
Properties of Compressed Fiber gaskets
Cannon Gasket cuts Compressed Fiber gaskets to your drawing in durometer and thickness specifications of 0.016" to 0.125" thickness. Good resistance to oils, fuels, water, and dilute chemicals. Moderate performance in low to medium pressure and temperature service.
Compressed Fiber tolerances and customization
Standard dimensional tolerances on Compressed Fiber gasketsland around ±0.010" to ±0.015" on OD and ID, depending on material durometer and thickness. Tighter tolerances are available on select grades. Cannon Gasket cuts Compressed Fiber to custom profiles in-house and matches lead times to your production volume. PSA backing, pad printing, custom packaging, and kitting are all on the menu when you need them.
How Compressed Fiber Performs
- High compressive strength — handles bolt loads that would crush soft rubber. - Resistance to steam, hot water, and a broad range of hydrocarbons depending on binder. - Excellent dimensional stability over service life.
Where Compressed Fiber Gaskets Are Specified
Pipe flange gaskets, pressure vessel sealing, steam and condensate service, hydrocarbon processing, refinery and petrochemical applications, and any high-pressure or high-temperature application where soft rubber cannot hold a seal.
When to Choose Another Material
For low-pressure or imperfect-flange sealing, cork-rubber or solid elastomer conforms better. For aggressive chemicals or very high temperature, specify expanded PTFE or flexible graphite.
Manufacturing Methods
Die-cut, Flash cut and steel-rule-cut. Often used in pipe-flange ring gaskets and full-face flange gaskets.
